{"id":392,"date":"2012-12-14T15:00:42","date_gmt":"2012-12-14T19:00:42","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/danharrisdesign.com\/?p=392"},"modified":"2012-12-14T15:46:41","modified_gmt":"2012-12-14T19:46:41","slug":"favorite-and-least-favorite-spray-guns-and-pps","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/danharrisdesign.com\/?p=392","title":{"rendered":"Favorite and least favorite spray guns and PPS"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Making guitars is one thing. \u00a0Finishing them is something else altogether! \u00a0As a kid I always wondered how guitar manufacturers managed to get such deep glossy finishes on their guitars. \u00a0Once I started building them I learned that the &#8220;coolest&#8221; finish for guitars is nitrocellulose lacquer. \u00a0This is what Gibson and Fender used in the 50&#8217;s, and while the formulas are no longer the same (the old stuff was very bad for people and the environment), one can still get a finish that&#8217;s close to the classics. \u00a0On recommendation from various web sites, I started using Sherwin Williams LOVOC- a lacquer that looks and feels like the old stuff but also has fewer dangerous volatile organic compounds. \u00a0It also dries faster than other finishes I&#8217;ve tried, like Behlins which took forever, I mean, literally a month or more, to dry. \u00a0I found a spray gun (you need a compressor for these- the bigger the better) that works great and also happens to be the cheapest spray gun I&#8217;ve ever bought. \u00a0It is a Tool Force touch up spray gun model A-C2. \u00a0I think I paid about $18 for it on Amazon. \u00a0I combined it with the &#8220;3M PPS system&#8221; -which allows you to work with these finishes using disposable spray cups, less clean-up and less exposure to the nasty chemicals. \u00a0This makes a big difference in the enjoyment of finishing a guitar. \u00a0The gun has a lot of adjustments, allowing you to get a very fine mist, great for sunburst finishes.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_393\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-393\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/danharrisdesign.com\/?attachment_id=393\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-393\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" data-attachment-id=\"393\" data-permalink=\"https:\/\/danharrisdesign.com\/?attachment_id=393\" data-orig-file=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/danharrisdesign.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/12\/DAN_3961.jpg?fit=1200%2C795&amp;ssl=1\" data-orig-size=\"1200,795\" data-comments-opened=\"1\" data-image-meta=\"{&quot;aperture&quot;:&quot;4&quot;,&quot;credit&quot;:&quot;Picasa&quot;,&quot;camera&quot;:&quot;NIKON D7000&quot;,&quot;caption&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;created_timestamp&quot;:&quot;1355478698&quot;,&quot;copyright&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;focal_length&quot;:&quot;26&quot;,&quot;iso&quot;:&quot;640&quot;,&quot;shutter_speed&quot;:&quot;0.016666666666667&quot;,&quot;title&quot;:&quot;&quot;}\" data-image-title=\"good and bad spray guns\" data-image-description=\"\" data-image-caption=\"&lt;p&gt;The $17 Tool Force is, in  my experience, fantastic for guitars.
